At first I thought it was a problem with encoding (https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-2154), but it was deeper. I patched .\Puppet Labs\Puppet\puppet\lib\puppet\util\windows\registry.rb to avoid a 'invalid byte sequence in US-ASCII' error (sorry, I don't know ruby and it may be a very dirty code) def open(name, path, mode = KEY_READ | KEY64, &block) hkey = root(name) begin hkey.open(path, mode) do |subkey| ####added for debugging#### print "All good with '# {hkey.keyname}\\#{path}'\n " ########################### return yield subkey end rescue Win32::Registry::Error => error ####added for debugging#### print "Error with '#{hkey.keyname} # {path}'\n #{error} \n \n" ########################### #raise Puppet::Util::Windows::Error.new("Failed to open registry key '#{hkey.keyname} #{path} '", error.code, error) end end I got this output: http://pastebin.com/8xnhA9rN Registry subkey 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall' is missing and Puppet incorrectly handle the situation.
