It has had the enable attribute supported since Puppet 2.7.17. On a precise vm with Puppet 3.4.3 installed, when I run: puppet resource service mysql enable=false Puppet lays down an override as expected. cat /etc/init/mysql.override manual Add Comment   Puppet / PUP-1813 Ubuntu 12.04: The upstart provider can not handle attribute enable Seems like puppet doesn't support the enable/disable parameter on Ubuntu (12.04) One easy way would be to use the manual option: echo manual >> /etc/init/<service>.override (as root) Even though Ubuntu is scheduled to move to systemd, it will still use upstart on 14.04, and probably beyond. 14.04 will be around for a long time, as an LTS release.
