System->Preferences->Sound in Lucid has Hardware tab with profiles so I think
it
is the Gnome volume control you talk about.
And even better it has the A52 profile which works using the patches previously
talked about. I hadn't realised that this was the place where profiles are
selected. Thanks very much.

Although I didn't set the default to 6 channels, you are correct I could not
get
stereo HDMI output (but only in Flash oddly). I will check whether this all
works later.
