Thanks to everyone who pitched in with ideas...  I had some "fun"
poking around before the drive failed completely; at least I learned a
thing or two!  I was fortunate since

   1) I had a complete off-site backup, and 
   2) the drive was still under warranty [I just got a brand new one
      from DELL].
