I usually use backend PHP json_encode to transform data (in arrays) to JSON.
I also have a class to convert XML data into arrays that can be easily translated into JSON using json_encode. Works very well for me. At the front end, you can see JSON data represented in a tree format with Firebug. The online tools look nice: good for validating.
