This is especially relevant if you work on one of the instrumentation libraries that won't support protobuf any time soon. Maybe the ideas inspire you. Should you plan to work on this, let's coordinate so that the Prometheus server will be able to understand what your library will expose, and so that we don't run into different directions at the same time.
