I agree with that.

In the "thin" case, however, it is important to fail fast and
noisily if a grid needed is unavailable due to e.g. CDN down,
router restarting, network plug fell out, or whatever.

Falling back to noop/"ballpark" can lead to very bad consequences,
e.g. unforeseen legal disputes about decisions based on the
mis-handled coordinates, large scale constructions misplaced
wrt. infrastructure, and in general all kinds of horrible things
