Ted - you really got me laughing with some of your suggestions. But, you original query - who's taking - that's what I also thought. For instance - if a user has to use a particular workstation - WHY Would that particular user take the keyboard home - and be left with SHIT at work. Makes no sense. Unless, of course, these are NOT Workstations at a particular users desk.

Cleaning crew. Yeah - I've heard of such in the past.

My suggestion - put up some Damned security cameras - Be like Big Brother - and Nail the Culprits!!!

Surprised nobody else suggested this obvious answer...

Looking for ideas on how to prevent users from removing USB devices
from the workstations to which they are attached, eg. some type of
physical way to secure USB connections. I'm working with a customer who
has a problem with keyboards, mice, and access card readers - all USB
devices - mysteriously disappearing.

Is it really mysterious? It's either the staff, others with access to the
office (cleaning crew, delivery people, random strangers walking in off the
streets) or wildlife.

1) Epoxy.
1.5) Sound an alarm (http://bit.ly/1k61ccu)
2) Memo to all staff that removing USB devices constitutes theft and will
result in immediate termination. Improve morale by offering a reward.
3) Naughty: Strip searches.
4) Nice: Give them all early XMas bonuses of keyboards, mice and readers
for personal home use.

Ho, ho, ho.
