xss-lock, nm-applet, and pactl (volume key) have been added to the default config [0]. If I'm not mistaken it should be ok if any combination of these are not installed, i3 merely tries to start them, it does not rely on them being there. Default behaviour for us has not changed. I'm not sure that I understand what the issue is. i3status is a separate tool (x11/i3status) with its own config file. Could you explain what aspect of this update has been broken?
