The approach you're taking in your version is ignoring a lot of pieces of ports framework which it ought to be using. bentley@ sent a port of wireguard-tools shortly after Jason's first mail, which is a lot closer to what's needed for that ports-wise. He was looking at wireguard-go separately but ran into some issues.
