The sidestepping needed to try to keep so many kde versions in the tree at once is really complex, next time we have an update to a different version like kde4->kf5 is, would it be viable to just cut across instead? Even if it means disabling some apps until they're ready. The method used for GNOME seems to work reasonably alright for this - sometimes there are build problems with individual ports but in general the tree is stable and there isn't any major complexity needed in conflicts/update handling...
