Naddy reported this to me a few weeks ago, but neither I nor shadchin@ could reproduce this. IPython *does* build fine without py-mako installed. Here's the twist. If py-mako is installed when sphinx starts, but is removed during sphinx running, then the crash occurs. So this is a race condition. Probably dpb is removing py-mako mid-build sometimes.
