I looked into this again. The "ja-mplus-ttf" we have in packages is misnamed, as it's not mplus, but a combination of mplus and another font called IPA; "ja-mplus-ttf" is really called "mix-mplus-ipa" in most places, including by upstream themselves. Calling *this* font "mplus" is appropriate, since it is in fact the mplus font. Anyway, I've been using this as my xterm double-width font for several months and it's very nice.
