I'm not really a user of matplotlib (other than very occasional runs with
netperf-wrapper) but it looks to me like py-gtk2 is one amongst a number of
backends, and it seems to have nice runtime detection/error messages.
Unless anyone knows different, I'd be in favour of just dropping the
dependency.

Other than this, diff looks good to me.
