How do I diagnose problems with the rc.d script at boot time?

I installed the sshguard-1.5p1 package, which also installs a
corresponding rc.d startup script. After adding pkg_scripts="sshguard"
to my rc.conf.local, I get the following two lines in the authlog after
rebooting:

Aug 25 18:36:46 xxxxxx sshguard[15396]: Started successfully
[(a,p,s)=(40, 420, 1200)], now ready to scan.
Aug 25 18:36:47 xxxxxx sshguard[15396]: Got exit signal, flushing
blocked addresses and exiting...

The weird thing is that running the same startup script from the
command line successfully launches the daemon every time.
