Sorry about the poor report, this hopefully is a better one. I followed
the instructions for setting up Postgres in
/usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes/postgresql-server-9.3.3
I do notice that my client_encoding and server_encoding are SQL_ASCII,
so that is likely the cause.
