I have rolled back to an early December snapshot and then built a new GENERIC kernel from a set of the source and ports trees that I downloaded at ~ 17:45 PST on 10 December. I then did fresh builds of the JDK 1.6 and 1.7 ports. My machine is now happily running Apache Solr without the dreaded threading error.

Consequently, I would venture to say that 10 Dec. is the terminus post quem for when things went sideways. Not that it narrows the window significantly, but that's all I have to go on.
