for the records: 

0) it's a problem of non-reparenting WMs, in my case cwm
1) see http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Problems_with_Java 
2) install x11/wmname
3a) run ``wmname LG3D'' before java apps OR
3b) prepend your window manager in .xinitrc with something like:
   ``(sleep 10; /usr/local/bin/wmname LG3D) &''
