A short update after a long time of not having any time for looking after this: After fiddling with the distribution jars a little and updating the PLIST, it works, or at least it seems to do so. Of course, it needs a ridiculous amount of memory and CPU, much more than a ten year old laptop can handle, but at least it runs. The first time I tried starting it (after bumping the memory limits) the machine hung itself, but I cannot reproduce it anymore---might as well be some obscure hardware or memory issue or whatever. If it happens again, I'll try to investigate. For what it's worth, all tests done on 5.1-RELEASE (with that slight modification to including libxul as mentioned in my other post) on i386---I can't afford the hassle of tracking current at the moment and don't have a spare computer where I could do it.
