I have tested ffmpeg and mplayer on i386. From a functional POV (from mplayer), seems to work. Have you tried encoding stuff using ffmpeg/mencoder? What is the configure patch for mplayer about? How does this relate to the ffmpeg update? Didn't you say on icb that the next ffmpeg update will change a lot of API compatibility? If so, SHARED_LIB bumps will need to be major.
