As Jake quite rightly noticed, ffmpeg need SDL, so there is no point in having
an SDL flavor for mplayer if it is to use dynamic ffmpeg. Below is the diff to
remove the sdl flavor, but this begs the question:

ffmpeg has no no_x11 FLAVOR, so what happens to mplayer's no_x11 flavor?

Now that it is expected that all systems should have the X libs/headers around the no_x11 FLAVORs should go. Although IMO that was a stupid move.

Can ffmpeg be built without x11? Maybe brad knows?

No. SDL is required for ffplay.
