Is there an advantage to keeping 2.x which outweighs the confusion
and upgrade hassle caused by having two versions?

Awesome 2.x already pulls in quite a few things, so I wouldn't say
either are particularly lightweight (compared to say cwm, dwm or
scrotwm). And XCB is quite nice to have.
