what does "need" mean? does it mean this port wouldn't work at all without it? or is it "there would be missing functionality"? whether applications should be able to change the system hardware volume, in the context of a shared audio system (that is, more than one program can "use" the hardware at a time), I think, is an unanswered question. my opinion is that applications that aren't explicitely programs to control the hardware mixer should only control the volume of the stream they produce. -- jake...@sdf.lonestar.org SDF Public Access UNIX System - http://sdf.lonestar.org
