i am using the standard sound and video output.
i have a single filter: vf = pp=ac

$ mplayer -nosound      # kill X
$ mplayer -vo xv # same
$ mplayer -vo x11 # plays the file
$ mplayer -vo xover # file playing, no video output
$ mplayer -vo gl # file playing, no fullscreen
$ mplayer -vo gl # file playing, no fullscreen, stuttering

but you said it yourself, mplayer has no business
killing X no matter what it does.

when i log back on:

$ pgrep mplayer
14392
5755

here is the trace: obiit.org/f/mplayer.trace.bz2

ps. vlc plays the file
