Adding the DejaVu dir to your font path is useful only if you want to use the DejaVu fonts with non-fontconfig clients. fontconfig clients `automatically' find the DejaVu fonts because /usr/local/libs/X11/fonts is listed in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf.
