/usr/ports/shells/heirloom-sh/pkg/DESCR:

The Heirloom Bourne Shell is a portable variant of the traditional UNIX
shell. It has been derived from OpenSolaris code, thus implementing the
SVR4/SVID3 level of the shell.

Today, the Bourne shell is most useful for script portability testing
and for the processing of legacy scripts.

Although the Bourne shell is not POSIX-compliant because the POSIX.2
standard introduced requirements incompatible with existing Bourne shell
behavior, it remains the ancestor of modern shell scripting languages.
Most scripts that run on the Heirloom Bourne Shell will work with any
shell still in use in the twenty-first century. It is relatively easy
to write shell scripts that are both POSIX-compliant and usable with the
Bourne shell.

Some historical scripts make use of language features proprietary to the
Bourne shell. In some cases, the conversion to portable shell language
may be a tedious task. Running such scripts on the Heirloom Bourne
Shell might be a convenient alternative.
