To be exakt, paddle appears to be NULL at this point I had a quick look at the code and I don't understand why this is happening at all. If it is built with -O0, I get the starting screen on macppc, but it's dead-slow, and I wasn't able to actually start the game. On i386, the game works fine, but it's too fast for me to survive longer than one or two minutes ;-) On armish, it compiles, but of course isn't usable (it just doesn't make sense to use SDL on arm).
