Sorry for the noise. I'm still learning the intricacies of the ports system and I wrongly assumed that ports could just be dropped into /usr/ports/mystuff and Just Work. In this case there were aparently some files such as Makefile.inc and gnustep.port.mk in the "real" ports tree that were needed and I overlooked. Either way your port worked fine. Hopefuly someone else will learn from my mistake... always do what the developers say. No matter how right you think you are. Apologies again.
