gutenprint question 5.2.0-beta4

I just bought an Epson C120 printer, which works fine under windows, but 
isn't supported by gutenprint 5.0.1
It is, however, supported under version 5.2.0-beta4.

I don't have much experience with ports beyond installing them.
I looked over the port section for 5.0.1, and most of the changes I saw 
looked like stuff that could be moved over by hand to a later version.
Is this a reasonable thing for me to try or am I way off the mark?
