Any changes you apply will be rechecked by the committers.

Unison port is in quite a good shape.
Read its files, browse its history in CVS repository (http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/ports/net/unison/
), see the diffs between revisions; it will become clear how the
changes are done and what are the best practices.
