I used to use cups a long time ago, and did also believe that
pstoraster was necessary to use gimp-print (gutenprint), because
that's how evey other OS was doing it. but then I discovered IJS.

so, I know pstoraster is not needed for gimp-print (gutenprint)
to work with cups. I tested this recently as well.

there *may* be other uses for pstoraster, but I am not aware of
them. if there are, there is probably another way to implement
them with ghostscript and/or foomatic.
