It sure sounds like you're missing
php5-mysql-5.x.x mysql database access extensions for php5
What's the output of:
pkg_info | grep php5-mysql
Once that package is built (and installed) in the case of 4.2, you'll
need to run:
# /usr/local/sbin/phpxs -a mysql
After which you should see something like:
Activating extension : mysql
