"Not often" is the answer to the first question, though of course I had
just checked the size of the linux file when I looked at them (which is
pretty reasonable) and didn't spot the others -

So having no wish to add another many hundreds of Mb file (* n archs)
to packages I retract my suggestion :)

I don't think a helper script is worth it for these.

I don't really know how to test this at runtime, but I'm assuming you're
already happy with that. Ports aspects look good, so -> OK sthen.
