you probably have a *.la file referencing libexpat.la.
to find out which one:
$ ls /usr/local/lib/lib*.la | grep libexpat
Well, the trick is, there is no /usr/local/lib/libexpat.la
Though I was lucky and the package snapshots were released tonight, so
I just reinstalled all ports from there.
