And besides icu i saw texlive uses gd though it's not instructed to pick up the one from the ports tree... seen this?
I will look into this. Thanks for letting me know. Texlive uses a lot of libraries that it will build static unless you tell it to link against system libs (--use-system-xxx). I was planning to allow texlive to use it's own static libs for things like icu until ports exist. Once we have your icu port in place I will try linking against it.
