Please read my first message again: On 17 May 2006, Liviu Daia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: : Is there a reason why Boutell gd has been upgraded to 2.0.33 in : 3.9? The new version depends on fontconfig, which in turn depends : on X. Consequently, I now need to install X in order to run pfstat, : mrtg, and a host of other things that have nothing to do with X. Can : we please have an option to switch back to gd 1.8.x back? AFAICT, I was asking why was GD upgraded to a new version and if we can still keep the old version around. Where's the whining? FWIW I still haven't got an answer to the first question. I might have understood something along the lines of: "1.8.x has some deep problems that were solved in 2.0.x", or "maintaining both 1.8.x and 2.0.x is too much work", or even "nobody cares about 1.8.x any longer". The answer I got back instead can be understood as either (1) "there's no reason", or (2) "the reason is way too subtle for your little brain to go into details." Excellent communicational skills guys, keep up the good work. > If you can't figure out how to run a stripped down system then don't > run a stripped down system. Duh? I never said I have a problem running a stripped down system. What I do have a (conceptual) problem with is making a bunch of console applications dependent on 30 MB of code that never gets run, for no good reason. Apparently I'm not the only one either: On 17 May 2006, Michael Coulter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]: wrote: : from the pfstat-2.0 announcement, [...] : Many users complained that they had to install xbase39.tgz on a : firewall, this is now no longer required. If you don't see anything wrong with going from that to a system that now includes X, well, there's not much I can do to explain my point any further. > > > Of course you could, e.g., remove xlogo, xclock and even xeyes > > > from your CF if you don't need it on your firewall. > > > > What's the point in installing 30 MB of code that never gets > > run? If you still don't get it, what I'm asking is: what are the disadvantages of keeping both 2.0.x and 1.8.x? > What are the great disadvantages? You have to download and untar one > file? Like I said, aside from the conceptual ones, there aren't any, it's a bright move. Anyway, it seems obvious by now that keeping 1.8.x around is not going to happen, so thanks again for your time.
