I believe this is a question you should be asking of the application maintainer for the program that fails (from gnome?). It may be a configuration problem. You might try removing the configuration file from your home directory, and letting the application create a new one for you. Also, perhaps it is tied to a NetWM hint that Sawfish doesn't recognize?
