I have this problem with auich(4), although the chipset docs for the audio subsystem on my motherboard claim it has a programmable, i.e. variable, sample rate. To work around this I use esound with the ``r 48000'' option. Anyone know where else to set this in various sound subsystems?
I would like to use KDE or gnome, but gstreamer is broken on amd64 so it's a bit hard to build it properly.
