This does not really happen to me. Note that the kde people are totally unhappy with arts, and are going to dump it for 4.0. In my opinion, the only sound worth saving is the one from the audio applications in kde, and I do think that this time is better-spent making sure amarok works fine with gstreamer (which is on my todo-list).
