Sorry about being vague, but it's an area that I can't directly comment on. Let's just say that I am aware of multiple cases where font foundries have sued software vendors around this particular issue. Of course, it may simply be the "big target" consideration as well - and folks like you will fly under the radar.
Concerning patents and IP around PDF - you have no issues there. As an ISO standard, PDF was vetted according to the ISO rules for such things and Adobe made sure all of our patents in this area were released accordingly.
