Duncan,

First, realize that timing in open source development tends to be a
little different than timing in commercial software development. Most
of us are volunteers that develop in our "spare" time.

Pluto 1.0.1 is based upon a portal that was developed internally at
IBM and then donated to apache. As such, I can't really give you an
idea of what it took. The first seed code to Pluto 1.1 was imported
about a year ago (Oct, 2004) and I'm hopefull that an alpha release
will go out before the end of the year (actually, before ApacheCon
would be great, but I don't think we're going to make it).

All that said, timing really depends on your intentions. Do you plan
to develop your own portlet container or utilize an existing one (i.e.
embedding pluto)? If you plan to develop your own container, will you
meet the requirements of the associated servlet spec by leveraging an
existing servlet container or will you implement your own. How much
experience does your team have with the Portlet Specification? What is
it about the existing open source portals that prevents you from using
one of them . . .Etc. . .

If you have more questions, please feel free to ping the list again,
or contact me offline and I'd be happy to provide some assistance in
your efforts. . .I do believe that the effort *can* be done by Easter
2006 if these conditions are right . . . .
