Hmm... that's not supposed to happen. Is that monitor really old? AFAIK, monitors manufactured after 96 ot 97, basta mid-90s, are supposed to shut to self down or display some kind of error message if you're tyring to feed it signal that might destroy it (if the protection mechanism is not present of course) such as insane refresh rates and resolutions.
