I previously described my Uninterruptible Power Supply goals. First, to power two older tower computers and two screens and KVM, about 220 watts.
(I plan to discuss low power modern computers later) Next, power as much as 2 KW of appliances and tools for a week-long power failure. ---- My first approximation "practice" UPS is an Impvirt 1200W (3.6KW peak, 8.8 Kg) charger-inverter, and a DCHouse 12.8V 100Ah (1280 Wh, 10.8kg) LiIon battery (large pickup-truck sized, though less heavy). I can parallel multiple LiIon batteries for longer runtime. I have a 1KW Honda generator that can feed the UPS. This setup is probably more than adequate for small-office- home-office un-interruptible power. This is NOT an APC "all in one UPS", with replacement batteries costing twice as much as an Office Depot sale-price APC UPS. Been there, done that, many scrap UPS carcasses free to someone I dislike. ---- Before next winter, I plan to expand to a whole house "week without power" system, plus extra generator power for unprepared neighbors. Gas furnace blower motor, electric chainsaw, etc. Perhaps a second Impvirt, and many more LiIon batteries. Perhaps 2 KW inverter plus 5 KW generator. Bringing this on topic, there may be open source software that will help manage all this, maybe even help manage neighbors with impractical expectations. With the help of other PLUG members, this might evolve into a decent PLUG meeting presentation, or an additional "Uninterruptible Presentation Supply" system for Russell, the next time a speaker cancels. keithl -- Keith Lofstrom [email protected]
