I've always booted to a console, not a GUI so this has been a learning
experience for me.
The login screen does have the selected DE listed in a drop-down box
allowing the user to select one. The login screen is the same for KDE and
Xfce, but once one's logged in the appearance is appropriate for the
selected DE.
