Oh, possibly because it's the largest city in the UNITED STATES on the west coast. Most people from the west coast know that LA is in the same time zone. (Sarcasm... ) However, I do know of one person from Redondo Beach (loosely a suburb of LA) that didn't know Oregon was on the coast. He actually tried to tell me I had to drive through Idaho to get to the coast. I know, it would probably be better to just use UTC +/- X, but that has issues too.
