Tim,

There are definite changes in xubuntu-9.04 from previous versions, As you
read here, I upgraded a laptop to that version. It boots, but takes 4-5
minutes. It's also very slow to shut down. I will make time this weekend to
reinstall it.

The two new issues with this release that I quickly resolved were the loss
of powering off when the system ran 'shutdown -h now' and the pcmcia
wireless card modules not being installed on boot up.

For power off on shutdown, I added to the kernel specification in
/boot/grub/menu.lst 'acpi=force pcmcia=noacpi'; for the wireless card
modules I added 'modprobe orinoco, and 'modprobe orinoco_cs' to
/etc/rc.local.

The only residual issue (which may go away with a re-installation) is a
weird screen display instead of the blanked screen after a period of
inactivity.
