I found the problem.  One would think that means x86_64 version...
no, the only Linux version of Firefox is 32 bits.  I found this
out because the firefox 3.5 that was automagically provided for
download works on a different system that is 32 bits.  

So given 32 bit firefox, I installed 32 bit java and 32 bit flash. 
All that processing power wasted ... sigh.

And while I can download source and compile 64 bit firefox, that
will probably break a lot of the plugins.
