moin moin,
We're in person this Thursday for a talk titled Git Fundamentals: Building
the Right Mental Model
Starts 19:00 AZ ( UTC - 7 )
https://fosstodon.org/@PLUG/116359252015407496
----
Abstract:
This talk focuses on Git fundamentals, not as a list of commands, but as a
mental model for how Git actually represents and manages changes.
We’ll walk through the core building blocks: commits, trees, and branches,
and how they relate to everyday operations. The goal is to make Git
predictable: understanding what it’s doing, why it behaves the way it
does,
and how to reason about it when things go wrong.
From there, we’ll connect those fundamentals to real-world workflows,
covering common pitfalls, recovery strategies, and how teams can use Git
effectively without creating unnecessary complexity.
Getting this right matters. Git sits at the center of modern development
and
operations, and a weak mental model often leads to confusion, broken
workflows, and costly mistakes. This is about building a foundation that
makes everything else easier.

Biography:
Taylor Bukoski is a Staff Software Engineer at a defense-tech
manufacturing
startup, where he works across the full stack, including infrastructure,
distributed systems, and DevOps in primarily Linux-based production
environments.
His background with Linux is largely practical, less about daily-driving a
specific distro and more about building and operating real systems that
run
on it. While macOS, Ubuntu, and Windows have all been daily drivers over
the
years, most of the environments he deploys to and maintains are
Linux-based.
He keeps a Linux VM close by as a kind of personal “production
playground,”
and tends to take a broad interpretation of “full stack”, from UI to
infrastructure, and occasionally all the way down to the metal if needed.
Taylor’s broader technical background spans both software and hardware.
After starting in computer science, he transitioned into computer
engineering to better understand how software maps to physical systems,
culminating in designing and implementing a 16-bit computer from
instruction
set through simulation and tooling.
He began building computers and programming at a young age and previously
served as a U.S. Marine Corps equipment maintainer, which shaped his
hands-on, systems-oriented approach. His interests center around deeply
technical systems, infrastructure, and the intersection of software with
real-world operations.
