Well, 
method 1: X :1, then run with DISPLAY=localhost:1.
method 2: Use SDL with svgalib.  I've got no idea how to work that; svgalib
won't work for me.
method 3: use ncurses gui?

OTOH, I just tried 1, and it didn't work for me.  I'm going to play with
that a little now...
