Another fair point: Why not just pick an image that doesn't really interfere with the boxes and icons that much then you don't need blur at all. That being said, I personally prefer blur - it's just a matter of taste. The added bonus with the blur is the "effect" or "animation" (more like, the time needed for it to show up and disappear later on).
